One of the larger towns in Maricopa County at 43 square miles, Gilbert boasts a population of 207,550 as of 2007. Gilbert was named for William Gilbert, former owner of the property where the first local rail siding was built. At that time, the 1890’s, rail sidings often determined where towns would be located and the towns were usually named for the property owners.

Gilbert grew the fastest of any town or city in the state in the 1990’s. As recently as 30 years ago, Gilbert was a little-know town famous for hay if nothing else.
